Fall is a great time to adjust your wardrobe. It gives you time to rethink the bad decisions from the past and project onward to the smart investments of the future. Every new year there are certain key pieces to buy to help coast you through the next few seasons, and hopefully, if the buy is right, to coast you into the next few years. I find that the more classic the purchase, even within trends, the longer your investment will pay off. This fall combines both the uber feminine juxtaposed with the individual edge of architecture pieces and the moto chic chick.
Now for the fun part! Scroll through this list and decide what’s right for you and your wardrobe and what will be the smartest investment. Think quality over quantity as a better constructed garment, in a higher quality fabric, will certainly payoff. In general, purchases in silk, leather and cashmere are great pieces that will hold through the tests of time.
Starting with the height of Fall style, we begin by uncovering the look of moto chic. Leather buckle boots and a leather bomber or cropped bolero jacket will cover you in this category. Golden Goose, Shipley & Halmos and Zero by Maria Cornejo have developed beautifully constructed, high quality leather and wool bombers. The bomber is a classic, and can be spiced up with a cute dress or worn urban chic with a great pair of tailored wide leg trousers. Imitation and Rachel Comey have both developed an ideal cropped blazer, bolero style jacket. The bolero is an excellent choice to slim waistlines and add instant shape and edge to any outfit. Plus it works great for work and play and is extremely versatile. For boots, Laurence decade has developed an incredible pair of mid height buckle boots with diamond leather patching. These boots will successfully complete the look and will move you well into the next of my top five.
Pair the moto chic look, your bomber or boots with anything feminine bohemian chic. Gypsy edge is another incredible trend for Fall 2008. One of the hottest designers, who can be difficult to hunt down, but does an impeccable job at creating bohemian chic is French designer Isabel Marant. Marant’s boho chic European style is a timeless classic and has major potential to last through the years. Marant uses natural fabrics, embroidery and drape to achieve her effortless chic style. And who wouldn’t want that?
Onto the third choice, we now move to the ultra casual boy cut chic cardigan or sweater. The long cardigan has been a popular choice for a while, whereas now you can play with the look by purchasing the boyish fit cardigan. Boxy and boy fit shapes are very popular this season to balance out the skinny pant that is still very a-la-mode. Two Japanese designers are thriving with these looks. Try Comme des Garcons variety of v-neck sweaters and cardigans with their signature heart patch lapel. Comme des Garcons is known for their excellent take on classic clothes with a boyish flair and cut. Tsumori Chisato also offers a long, loose cardigan with a playful touch of contrast color pockets.
Now for the professional investment, we move onto forward thinking pieces with edge, strong color, shine and shape. Thakoon and Mayle are pros at making sophisticated pieces with fun and flair. Incandescent gleaming retro looks inspired by the 60’s is the strong philosophy behind this seasons professional pieces. It can be a challenge to combine business conservative with creative shapes and prints to come up with something unique to stand out above the rest. Yet it is possible to be both appropriate and original at the same time and Mayle and Thakoon execute this look with pizzazz. Invest in one of Thakoon’s vintage silhouette dresses or Mayle’s trench coat to give you the confident edge you need.
Finally we come to the shoe pick. Chosen to be both versatile and fun I declare the bootie and oxford as the ultimate flavors of the season. They can be worn with a dresses or suits and work and flatter in many ways. A personal lover of flat shoes for day time, I would recommend the moccasin bootie by Rachel Comey. Black leather with cut outs, this bootie is a perfect transition shoe. As for the heel, Alexander McQueen does the haute oxford cut out, very high class, with a very high heel to match.
Now go, into the day and the night, with your pick of what works for your silhouette and your style. Remember, personal choices in fashion aren’t about what each piece says itself, but the language it speaks to you while you’re wearing it.
